Environmental Educator/Fishing Instructor/Boat Captain

The Environmental Educator/Fishing Instructor/Boat Captain will wear many hats and will need to be flexible regarding job duties. As an Educator/Instructor they will need to be enthusiastic and engaging in the classroom while also acting as a mentor and role model. As a Boat Captain they will be required to operate the Thea Marie for various field trips as while as maintenance on other acquired vessels.


We are seeking someone who can teach our signature program in the Palm Beach County school system. Qualified candidates should have experience working with school-aged children (elementary, middle, and high school). A background in marine biology, environmental science, or fishing is preferred. Some boating experience is required with preference towards individuals with a 50 ton Masters license. Experienced swimmers with Lifeguard Certification or ability to work towards a Lifeguard Certification is required. Candidates will be responsible for their own transportation and will need to be willing to travel throughout Palm Beach County. This role is a great opportunity for someone who is looking to grow into a full-time position with a well-established, respected organization.


Directly reports to the Program Director.

Job Duties:

  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication
  • Support the Florida Fishing Academy and its mission
  • Follow policies and procedures as set out in Employee Handbook
  • Assist in scheduling for classes/field trips
  • Act as mentor and role model in classes and on field trips
  • Training and supervising of seasonal employees and volunteers
  • Assist in development of new curriculum/programing
  • Self motivated and willing to learn
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to successfully operate and manage boat/crew
  • Maintenance of acquired/donated vessels
  • Other duties as requested by supervisor

About the Florida Fishing Academy:

The Florida Fishing Academy is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2006 for the purpose of empowering at-risk youth with positive life skills, alternatives to destructive or antisocial behavior and a sense of responsibility for shaping the world around them. FFA uses fishing and other water sports as a vehicle for delivering these lessons, weaving effective life, environmental and social skills into youth-oriented, hands-on educational programs through youth camps and field trips.
